Notorious killer Michael Myers is back to finish the job of killing his sister and his knife has been idle for too long.

Review
After a successful remake of the first Halloween movie, director Rob Zombie is back to tackle the second.  Zombie has quickly become one of the best horror directors on the market but missed with this film. The first Halloween remake was about modernizing an already successful first run. He did everything right with notorious serial killer Michael Myers. That included an in depth look at the killers childhood which was truly frightening. In this the second film, Zombie paid his homage to the original but wanted to make it wholly his own. It worked at times but not enough to keep the viewer interested. A few years have passed since Michael Myers carved his way through the populace of Haddonfield, Illinois. People are trying to forget the nightmare as best they can and move on with their lives. If you are familiar with this series at all you know Michael will be back until his work is done. That work is killing Laurie Strode (Taylor-Compton) and anyone who gets in his way. I liked the darker aspect of the story in this film. The dialogue is darker and more depressing than the first, the characters seem stressed and on edge like one would expect. All the same characters are back that survived the first but they have lost their luster though. The worst of the cast is the killing catalyst himself in Michael Myers. Zombie tries to humanize him so we see shots of the monster without his mask which doesn’t work at all. Taking the monster aspect out of Myers makes his uncanny ability to be everywhere at once come into question. Leave him a monster and the film has the right flow. Dr Loomis (McDowell) plays a money grabbing, novel panderer that grows tiresome and is a poor character shift for the once honorable doctor. The most bizarre thing about this film though has to be the dream sequences that keep popping up periodically. For some reason the viewer is inundated with clips of Myers mother (Moon Zombie) walking with a horse time and time again. It could have been removed entirely from the film as no one would miss it. Zombie seems fiercely loyal to his wife and putting her in every movie he directs which has worked before until this role. Rob Zombie is known for his almost too realistic versions of killing sprees and this film was no different. Without a doubt this is the most violent movie in recent memory. If you think you have seen violent stabbings in movies before be warned. Those were merely paper cuts compared to the killing strokes in this movie. If you are a fan of the violent and gory side of horror films you will not be disappointed. If you factor out unnecessary shots of dog eating and face stomping the violent scenes happen abruptly and often so you will not be disappointed in that department. Overall I didn’t hate this movie I just felt the story and characters seemed off. I cannot recommend this film though for the story is an off putting tale of trying to humanize a monster. When your main killing machine is the weak link it is going to be a pass. Keep a stab count though as they never seem to stop.

T Factor + If you do not need a strong storyline for your horror films then this could score way higher on the list

T Factor – If you do not like over the top killing scenes this could score lower on the rating scale.

An everyday superhero named Defendor battles crime as he looks for his nemesis Captain Industry.

Review
This movies tagline should read Batman with Autism. If that doesn’t appeal to you as a movie idea you can stop reading this review right now as this movie is as bad as the tagline sounds. Even after sitting down and really dissecting this movie I am still not sure what I just watched. The easiest way I can describe this movie is to oversimplify movie genres. Picture movies as a triangle with the three points represented by the action, comedy, and drama genres respectively. Defendor would fall in the dead center of the triangle. I guess it could be called an Actdramedy but whatever you want to call it, good is certainly not on the list. The film starts off as sort of a comedy with the character Defendor played well by Woody Harrelson. He is breaking up crime with a motley assortment of household items. A wooden bat, marbles, even a jar of wasps come into play as Defendor painfully tries to rid the streets of scum. Now I say sort of a comedy because while it won’t make you laugh it just had that vibe. You quickly realize that the character Defendor is not all there mentally. With that realization the film breaks down into a depressing drama of a sad broken man fighting crime because of mental instability. To make matters even more complicated he befriends a street walker named Katerina played quite well by Kat Dennings. The two of them form this dark bond of drawn out reliance that really is painful to watch. Trying to figure out where this film is going is akin to pulling out your own teeth with pliers it is that bad. The action scenes are pitiful as one would expect with an everyday superhero taking on everyone from the mob to corrupt undercover cops. I literally watched the entire movie with a blank expression on my face and I don’t think I blinked once as this film was so uninspiring. Director and Writer Peter Stebbings runs everything at the viewer from flashbacks of Defendor when he is a kid, to tedious scenes of a doctor played by Sandra Oh, gauging Defendor’s mental capacity. To make a long story short all of the story development just turned this movie in to one unwatchable mess. I am taking a stab in the dark that this was supposed to be a black comedy but it failed to capture that theme. Stebbings would have been better served to make this into a straight comedy/action and forget all the dramatic nonsense that no one will care about. I cannot recommend this movie as although the acting was decent all I can say is Defendontwatch it.

T Factor + If you like quirky films then this could score higher on the rating scale.

T Factor – If you are looking for comedic value from a film of this nature this could score lower on the rating scale.

A devastating and unpredictable crisis breaks out in a United States park and has citizens battling for their very survival.

Review
I wonder if director M. Night Shyamalan is on the CIA and FBI’s most wanted lists as this guy makes more bombs than most terrorist organizations. It wouldn’t surprise me if he co wrote The Anarchist Cookbook either the way his career is going. The Happening was supposed to be a new chapter in M. Night’s career as this was his first R rated movie which allowed him for more creative license. He wanted to put his last couple of movies behind him and really get back to the movies he is lauded for, being The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. He captured none of his early genius and put together a truly bewildering film of staggering awfulness. The film is based on an unknown event where people lose the will to live. What is causing this phenomenon? Is it a terrorist attack? Could it be an army experiment gone wrong? Or maybe even a natural occurrence? All good questions and all should have taken the viewer on a great journey to discovering the truth. But after a great opening scene where the unknown event starts, the film then spirals out of control. The opening scene is confusing but in a good, creepy sort of way that made you think this film has the goods. However with the introduction of high school science teacher Elliot Moore played by Mark Wahlberg it proves M. Night doesn’t learn from his past mistakes. I really like Wahlberg so it pains me to write this about him but his role could be included on the worst acting roles of all time. His nasally high pitched delivery coupled with his bizarre personality were the scariest thing about this film bar none. Scene after scene this confusing character drives the movie further down the rating scale with his unbelievable words. It is unfair to single Wahlberg out though as he was not the only one destroying this film. His wife in the movie Alma Moore played by the normally reliable Zooey Deschanel also was way below par. Her awkward brooding delivery missed the mark time and again and was another major distraction to this film. The random character introductions in the film were also failures as there doesn’t seem to be a normal person alive in this film. This event is supposed to make you lose the will to live not turn you into the weirdest people in the United States of America. The random scenes of thrills and violence that happen very occasionally throughout this film are actually well thought up and nicely done. Although having to sit through line after line of terrible dialogue to get there makes it not worth the wait. When the ending does come you may think the unknown event maybe happening to you as you will probably also have lost the will to live. M. Night needs to get back to basics as every movie he has done seems to have super overblown crazy characters that just kill the movie. I cannot give this movie my recommendation as a movie titled The Happening does not have much happening at all besides Mark Wahlberg conversing with trees.

T Factor + If you are a fan of M Night Shyamalan’s work then this could score higher on the rating scale.

T Factor – If you like your horror movies full of bloody action then this could score lower on the rating scale.

Three American road trippers head cross country but things get out of control when a prank goes terribly wrong.

Review
At first glance at the title of this film I assumed this was going to be the story about the Swedish pop duo Roxette. In hind sight that probably would have been a better film. The quiet desolate highways of America stretch for thousands of miles in every direction. Every year hundreds of people simply vanish off the face of the earth from these remote locales and some American highways even have the dubious distinction of being haunted. So a film taking place mainly on these deserted and dark stretches of road has the setting down for a great thriller movie. This film maybe had the setting captured but that is about it. This film is proof positive that Hollywood golden boy J. J. Abrams is not Rumplestiltskin and cannot spin straw into gold. He produced and co wrote this mess of a film so it proves he is human. Director John Dahl coming off his last movie the brilliant film Rounders let this one flounder from about 15 minutes onward. The film is about three people on a road trip heading cross country with their final destination being New Jersey. Casting is the major flaw in this film. The two male leads the brothers Lewis and Fuller Thomas played by Paul Walker and Steve Zahn respectively were just an awful pairing. They were not convincing in any way on the dramatic side and when that happens the movie just crumbles all around it. The film has an easy feel and start with Lewis driving cross country. It is sort of a teenager vibe to the storyline but still works with this type of movie. With the introduction of Fuller this film rapidly descends into pure idiocy. Long road trips can often be boring and many a game and horseplay can occur on these treks. However playing unbelievable practical jokes with a CB radio on truckers that are no further than a 5 mile radius is just a terrible plot development. With how dumb Steve Zahn’s character is you get the impression he would have been murdered long before this movie would ever take place. He constantly is saying stupid things and getting into situations that are not plausible and you actually want to see him murdered in this movie. Paul Walker as Lewis plays the straighter laced brother and is just a generic college student and has his usual goofy delivery to the max in this film and his performance was below par. They don’t ever seem to capture the danger of the tense situations so you never take that thrilling journey with them. I think also the poor blend of humor into this film was a major deterrent. Helen Hunt look alike Leelee Sobieski playing Lewis’s object of affection needs to wear a bra in this film. However she did a decent job in the movie but it gets lost in the mix of the crappy dialogue of the brothers. With the paper thin character development the films frights and scares are limited and too infrequent to be enjoyed properly. The unknown evil killer stalks the threesome at every turn in the quietest 18 wheeler ever recorded. He is a supernatural five steps ahead of this threesome at all times and it gets tiring really quickly. The ending can’t get here quick enough on this film as it truly has little redeeming qualities. I cannot recommend this film for it is lack of thrills and poor characters make you think the ride is the polar opposite to joy.

T Factor + Do not need strong dramatic actors for your thrillers this could score higher on the rating scale.

T Factor – If you need lots of action sequences in your film this could score lower on the rating scale.

After spending most of his life in a mental institution the infamous killer Michael Myers is back and looking for his baby sister.

Review
It is hard to believe that over 30 years have passed since this first Halloween was released. Like most horror movies that have had long runs and in this case a course of eight movies. The once iconic brand has dwindled down to an embarrassing pathetic state. That is no more as horror director Rob Zombie must have had seen what the fans were seeing and worked to correct it. It takes a brave person to tackle a screen icon in super killer Michael Myers but lucky for us Zombie was able to breathe life back into a franchise floundering in awfulness. I had lost faith long before Busta Rhymes was delivering round house kicks to Michael Myers in the last movie Halloween Resurrection. Gone are all the gimmicks as this is a reimagining of the first movie and arguably the best of the franchise done by director John Carpenter. This film takes the thin original story and modernizes it with most of the same characters and expands on it giving insight into the creation of the monster that is Michael Myers. This film unlike the first offers a firsthand glimpse of Michael Myers childhood and is the best part of this movie. If you think Michael Myers all grown up is a monster seeing him as a kid is very frightening. The messed up family life and the bullying at school shows you the beginnings of one of one of the most prolific killers in cinema history. Director Rob Zombie is clearly a fan of the original and follows the same storyline for most of the scenes involving Michael’s adulthood. The story may be the same but the execution is not. Gone from the original is the average sized Michael with pasty white William Shatner mask and knife (truly it is a Shatner mask if you did not know). It has been replaced by an enormous man in actor Tyler Mane with a beat up dirtier mask and a will to kill in any way possible. Gone is the camera work from the original that had you terrified at every turn wondering when and where Michael will strike. It has been replaced by sheer brutality and viciousness of Michael as he kills the citizens of Haddonfield with reckless abandon. Zombie pays homage in all the right places though as the same legendary music plays as Michael stalks his victims. The film is well constructed for the horror lover as Michael is angry and in search of his sister and his brutality is as expected bloody and violent. The film also uses some unique flickering camera work that was a nice new touch and maybe we will see that in more movies of this type. There are drawbacks to this film as I found although the human element was a good touch when Michael was young it didn’t pay off when he was old. The film was trying to humanize the older Michael and it was misplaced and a major story killer. The actual dialogue was at times subpar and the acting missed its mark in places. But for all of that this movie shows with a new set of eyes and a passion for the genre you can literally save a franchise with new direction. I give this movie a strong recommendation to fans of the original and horror in general. It works into your mind with violent abrupt killing and truly can give you the shivers with the suddenness of a slammed door.

T Factor + If you don’t care about solid dialogue in your films this could score higher on the rating scale.

T Factor – If you don’t like scenes of extreme violence this could score lower on the rating scale.

A down on his luck cattle rancher has to escort a criminal boss cross country to Yuma for trial. The problem is the criminal’s crew will not let their boss go that easily.

Review
Long gone are the days where westerns ruled the silver screen. The likes of Clint Eastwood and John Wayne have been basically replaced by robots and superheroes and anything else that can be computer generated. They are not big business anymore so when the odd one does come out I get to enjoy a truly underappreciated and dying genre. I have long said you need two things to make a western work. The first is a good lead and in this case it is Dan Evans played very well by Christian Bale. The second a strong bad guy and in this case it is the infamous Ben Wade played brilliantly by Russell Crowe. Everything else in a western can be built around these two things and a lot can be forgiven when those two roles are properly cast. The cover of this movie deems it to be the best western since Unforgiven and I would have to agree with that statement. 3:10 to Yuma is a seamless blend of drama and action that unfolds in late 19th century Arizona. The story centers around Dan Evans and his family struggling to make ends meet on his cattle farm. In order to save his farm Dan offers to escort Ben Wade with a small group of others to Yuma for trial and execution. Ben Wade leads a group of outlaws that will rob anything that turns a profit and he must answer for these crimes. Wade has made his men rich time and time again so when he is captured it is up to his group of outlaws to save him.  It is on this journey to Yuma where the movie gets very interesting. It is in the dialogue and interaction between Evans and Wade that really force you to like this movie. See it is natural for one to be pulling for Evans as he is down on his luck good guy and people love the underdog. However Wade is so charismatic in a malevolent type of way that you almost want him to escape his captors. You are pulled constantly through this film on both sides of good and evil and that’s why this film worked so well. The film is well cast with Tudyk, Mol, and Durand providing solid supporting roles but all were outshone by Ben Foster playing Wade’s deranged evil sidekick Charlie Prince. Prince is a character to fear by his eyes alone but was truly a great addition to this film and added a nice wildcard into the mix with his lunatic tendencies. I would point out that Luke Wilson was in this film for some reason. While it would be easy to bash on his terrible performance it is easier to say he never should have been cast in a western in the first place. When journeying in the old west things can happen and this film was no different. Whenever the movie seemed to hit that slow part something would revitalize it so the film never dragged. The slow journey across the barren land was worth the trek to make it to a truly great classic shootout worthy of this type of film. This was Director James Mangold first foray into the Wild West and for the true western lovers out there I hope it is not his last. I give this movie a big recommendation as they might be hanging Ben Wade in the morning before the night is done but that is a journey you won’t want to miss.

T Factor + If you like westerns this could score higher on the rating scale.

T Factor – If you like more action packed movies this could score lower on the rating scale.

A small town is held hostage by a mysterious mist that seems to have unknown terrors stalking it.

Review
Director Frank Darabont takes on his third movie based on the works of one of the most prolific storywriters of all time Stephen King. Having directed two great films in The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile prior to this gave me great hopes he wouldn’t fall under the category of another crappy Stephen King movie. This film unfortunately fell somewhere in the middle of great and crappy but at least it was entertaining. When one thinks of a typical horror story it usually involves things that go bump in the night. So watching a story where things go bump in the white seemed fresh and new. The film does not really start until the unnatural fog roils into the small town trapping a medium sized group of people in a grocery store. I liked the casting in this film as I find smaller known casts often times lead to more realistic viewing in horror films. The Punisher himself actor Thomas Jane takes on the lead role of David Drayton and does a good job of leading the story in the right direction. The Mist is a really cool concept as if you have ever been surrounded by dense fog or mist it can limit your visibility to zero. Where the night time dark is chased by the light of dawn the mist sits in this movie from day to night giving the citizens no reprieve from its menacing presence. The film does a good job of providing glimpses of the terrors stalking the mist while combining that with sounds and action that cannot be seen but lead you to imagine the worst. The scenes of violence come at all the right places in this film being bloody and in your face to unseen and frantic. The myriad of creatures in the mist are very well thought up and highly detailed but very poorly constructed graphically. Some of the creatures are so poorly done in fact that it really drives the movie down on the rating scale. This coupled with the oddest of confrontations between the people trapped in the store led a film that could have worked to below average. In times of unknown crisis it is only inevitable that confrontation will occur within groups. There will be varying degrees of paranoia and differing opinions on plans on attack of solving the dilemma. In this film the confrontations ranged the gamut of complete idiocy to one of the worst characters to grace a film in recent memory Mrs. Carmody. Mrs. Carmody a religious woman is well played by Harden but so unbelievable and out of place in this film that you will find yourself hating her instead of enjoying the movie. It takes a special type of character to ruin a movie and she is one. The film also runs about 20 minutes too long but can be forgiven with a really cool ending that almost redeems the movie. Overall this film has good and bad elements and while I enjoyed the struggle for survival the lack of budget and odd character interactions were too much for my liking. I cannot give this movie my recommendation because the mist held things better left unseen.

T Factor + If you do not mind poor CGI then this could score higher on the rating scale.

T Factor – If you do need believable characters in your films then this could score lower on the rating scale.

A select group of people have the ability to transport and not everyone thinks this is natural.

Review
For some reason as I write this review I have the theme song from the Gummi Bears cartoon running through my head. Sorry for that obscure insight to my inner workings. It sometimes happens in life that you meet a person who has admirable qualities but come off as trying too hard to be liked. This is the case with Jumper. I wanted to like it but it seemed like it was trying way too hard to win my approval. Jumper is a simple tale of people with the power of teleportation. They can bounce all over the world with differing degrees of success and modification. For my nerdy fans out there it is basically Nightcrawler’s ability from X-Men but without the awesomeness of that comic book character. For right or wrong these people who teleport (They are called Jumpers) are pursued by a group of people (called Paladins) that deem their abilities unnatural. So it is a pretty simple concept of a game of cat and mouse with a cool visual ability but it doesn’t pan out. First and foremost the lead character David Rice played by actor Hayden Christensen was terrible. I am especially tough on Hayden as he was one of the black eyes on the new Star Wars movies. He never seems natural on screen and it is a major distraction. He also has zero chemistry in this film with love interest Millie played by Rachel Bilson. Their pained courtship was hard to watch and downright cheesy. Thank god for the casting of Jamie Bell as the jumper Griffin. He alone almost saved this film with his supporting role. He has added charm and humor to this film with his calm under pressure demeanor and ability to direct the fight scenes. Very few movies work where the leads are outshone by their support and this film is no different. Throw in Samuel L Jackson with blonde hair as the very generic chief paladin and the films cast was very poorly constructed. The story is also way too long in the making. I get we have to follow David Rice in his journey to understand his teleporting powers but there is no need to take so long getting there. The film also has David Rice jumping all over the world to various famous landmarks and sites and that is where the movie is trying way too hard. We get you can teleport now entertain us with it. You would think with the ability to transport that they could hit up an acting school but alas this is not the case. The fight scenes while neat and well thought up in their execution come infrequently and the viewer is forced to sit through spotty dialogue and predictable back story to get there. Director Doug Liman could have put this movie together better and pulled for a better cast in my mind. I actually would look forward to a second Jumper if they do one as we could get right into the fighting from the start which is what everyone wanted from this film in the first place. I cannot recommend this film while entertaining at times it does not utilize the teleporting ability to its maximum potential and the characters will convince no one.

T Factor + If you like Hayden Christensen as an actor this could score higher on the rating scale.

T Factor- If you need frequent bursts of action this could score lower on the rating scale.

An Ex Federale is setup to take the fall on an assassination attempt on a Texas senator. He will stop up at nothing to get revenge on the people who betrayed him.

Review
I was a huge fan of Director Robert Rodriguez’s portion of the Grindhouse films dubbed Planet Terror. It was in Planet Terror where Machete came to be as he appeared in a pretty entertaining fake trailer during that film. It is too bad for us the viewer he didn’t stay there as this movie was appalling from pretty much start to finish. I have really enjoyed most of Rodriguez’s movie resume and like his unorthodox over the top campy style but this film swung for the fences and didn’t even connect with the ball. Machete was flawed from the get go with an aged actor Danny Trejo playing the title character. This review will hopefully answer a question I have answered a hundred times before. The guys name is DANNY TREJO. He shows up in lots of movies as small characters and no one ever seems to know his name. Now Danny Trejo is in his mid sixties and good for him he tackles this role with vigor but he looks his age on screen and it is painful to watch. Machete is an odd character with his grizzled visage and stiff movements and yet we are supposed to believe he is a dangerous killer and seducer of women. The film’s opening sequence shows us that this is no nonsense type of movie with exaggerated blood spray that rivals the movie Kill Bill. The film could never keep this type of energy though as it would just be a bloodbath of epic proportions and no direction. Machete is a revenge movie with little substance and scenes of violence that you are actually bored by halfway through. An odd story of political wrongness and immigration law are combined uneasily with strained dialogue and shallow characters. This movie tries to make up for its lack of script by throwing names at you like De Niro, Alba, Rodriguez, and even a strung out looking Lohan but they were all swamped under a terrible story. The film will not surprise you in any way as it floats from scene to scene waiting for over the top action that never really satisfies you. It culminates with an ending reminiscent of the street fight in the movie Anchorman. I was expecting Steve Carell to show up with a trident. I cannot give this movie my recommendation as it was a bizarre offering from the usually solid Rodriguez (I picked on Rodriguez as he was the veteran compared to the debut from Ethan Maniquis). It was a struggle to get through and while I applaud the originality I have to show disdain to the finished product.

T Factor + If you like campy movies or a big fan of Rodriguez past work this could score higher on the rating scale.

T Factor – If you do not like over the top scenes of violence this could score lower on the rating scale.
